That answer surprises a lot of people because other apps do notify. If you're used to Snapchat or Instagram flagging screenshots of disappearing content, it's reasonable to assume iMessage works the same way. It doesn't, and understanding why clears up most of the confusion.

Apps like Snapchat build screenshot detection into their own code because their whole premise is temporary, self-destructing content. When you screenshot inside Snapchat, the app itself notices and sends that event back to its servers, which then notify the other person.

iMessage isn't built that way. It's a persistent messaging service, more like a permanent conversation log than a disappearing-content app, and Apple has never added a feature that reports screenshot activity back to the other party. Messages, the Photos app, and the rest of iOS treat a screenshot the same way regardless of what's on screen: it saves an image to your camera roll, full stop.

There is a technical piece worth knowing here. iOS does have a system-level mechanism that lets an app detect when a screenshot was just taken on that device, intended for things like blurring sensitive banking data before a screenshot is saved. Apple documents this for developers as the screenshot notification API. But detecting a screenshot locally and transmitting news of it to a second person over the network are two different things. Snapchat and Instagram do both. iMessage does neither for ordinary content, because Apple never wired that reporting behavior into the app.

So whether you screenshot:

the sender is never notified, and there's no log anywhere in Messages showing that a screenshot happened.

The one iMessage feature that behaves differently: Invisible Ink

iMessage does have a privacy-oriented effect called Invisible Ink. When someone sends a message, photo, or video with Invisible Ink applied, it shows up as a blurred, shimmering bubble instead of the actual content. The recipient has to tap or swipe the bubble to reveal what's underneath, according to Apple's own support documentation.

It's important to be precise about what Invisible Ink actually is, because a lot of blog posts online blur this together with "disappearing messages" or "view-once" media from other apps, and that's not accurate. Invisible Ink:

Once the recipient reveals an Invisible Ink photo, it behaves like any other photo in the thread. It can be screenshotted, saved, or forwarded without any alert going back to the sender. Despite what you may read elsewhere, iMessage has no built-in "view once" photo feature comparable to WhatsApp's, and no screenshot-detection feature tied to any message effect. If you're looking for that kind of self-destructing, screenshot-alerted media, it's a feature of other apps, not iMessage.

The only genuinely time-limited content in Messages is audio messages, which are removed from the conversation two minutes after being played unless you tap "Keep," per Apple's documentation on audio messages in Messages. That auto-removal is unrelated to screenshots and has no notification tied to it either.

What this means if you're sending something sensitive

Because iMessage doesn't flag screenshots, don't rely on "no notification" as a sign that a photo hasn't been captured or shared further. The lack of an alert isn't a security feature, it's simply the absence of one. If you send a photo over iMessage, treat it the same way you'd treat handing someone a printed copy: once it's on their device, you have no way to know what they do with it next.

If you're keeping sensitive photos on your own iPhone and want to reduce the odds of someone else seeing them (a shoulder-surfer, a friend scrolling your camera roll, or someone briefly borrowing your phone), that's a separate problem from screenshot notifications, and it's one the Photos app doesn't fully solve on its own. Apple's built-in Hidden album in Photos can lock behind Face ID, but it still lives inside the Photos app and syncs through iCloud like the rest of your library. Apps built specifically for this, like Secure Folder: Incogni Vault, move private photos and videos into a separate hidden gallery outside the Photos app entirely, locked behind its own PIN or Face ID that's independent of your phone passcode.
